Have you heard the latest buzz on flow?

Flow: When you are fully absorbed in an activity feeling truly authentic, deeply satisfied, and achieving high quality results. ~ Jacquie Nagy

More specifically, flow is the mental, physical, and biochemical ‘perfect storm’ internal state performance artists, athletes, musicians, actors, and dancers report ‘sinking into’ when they are at their peak.

Flow gives people edge. Whether you want to climb a higher mountain, be a more inspiring leader, a more loving partner, or start a movement flow closes the gap from where you are and where you want to be more effectively and quickly.

Globally, people are seeking more flow as a self-mastery tool in their pursuit of living a more authentic life and ‘living their dream’.

Thought-leaders, speakers, coaches, authors, spiritual healers and others are on a transformational quest to cause a positive shift in the world. I like to call this the Dream Beyond the Dream.

A collective consciousness of flow is expanding. Along with a growing sense of urgency.

Not everyone knows how to create flow the way performance artists can. And when we allow it, transformation can take time. However….I believe anyone can access flow, and transformation can happen more quickly, when we want it to.

Can you imagine living in a world where collectively, we (you,me, anyone) are anchored in a loving state of flow – being more kind, more compassionate, more peaceful? I can. In fact, I know …as it’s already happening!

Collectively, flow is creating a quantum shift to a more kind, loving & peaceful planet.    ~Jacquie Nagy

My favourite TED talk on flow is by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: Flow, the secret to happiness. (You can watch it here.) Mihaly shares how flow is a state spontaneously created when a person is engaged in a balanced activity of control (high skill) and arousal (high challenge).

The justification of climbing is climbing, like the justification of poetry is writing; you don’t conquer anything except things in yourself…. The act of writing justifies poetry. Climbing is the same: recognizing that you are in flow.

― Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow

He also points out apathy as being on opposite spectrum to flow. Apathy engulfs a person when skill is low and a suitable level of challenge is missing. Examples he gives are “watching television and in the bathroom sitting”.

If flow is the ideal state for peak performance, is apathy the ideal state for low performance?

Apathy vibrates similarily to complacency. Both lead to one’s ‘selling out’ in life. Giving up on the possibility of something more. Considering the consequences, both complacency and apathy are IMHO at the root of nearly all mental health issues. According to Youth Mental Health Canada – It is estimated that 10-20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder – the single most disabling group of disorders worldwide. Teaching people how to access ‘flow’ is more important than ever before!

How will you create flow in your life? And in the lives of your children and loved ones?  From my own personal experience, and as a trainer and coach …. anyone can create flow – when you know HOW.

The most effective way to learn is experientially in a live environment…like a tennis player learns to play…with a racket on a court.

Thought I’d share some interesting discoveries from a decade of my own personal practice creating, anchoring, and activating flow…

– Internal dialogue is silenced.
– Brain feels ‘in sync’.
– Self identity is suspended.
– Sensory awareness expands.
– Increased focus.
– Distractions are less appealing.
– A deeper, wiser sense of knowing.
– Higher Intention guides actions.
– Quality of work increases.
– Challenges feel lightweight.
– A sense of effortlessness sinks in.
– Resistance is replaced with receiving.
– Overall experience feels natural and authentic.

I have also noticed:

– The length of time it takes for a flow state to wane, is relative to how deeply the state of flow is embodied.
– Transitioning in and out of a flow state is not nearly as easy as it sounds.
– Mastery of flow can be achieved through rigorous practice (10,000 hours NOT required)
– Discipline is key.

Flow enhances dreams. Apathy destroys them. Which state will you choose right now?

Being able to shift into a flow state ‘on the spot’ is a key to your self-mastery.
