This is what over thinking can look like!

This is what over thinking can look like!

Is your head so full of information some days it feels as though it’s going to explode? (Metaphorically speaking of course!)

Have you lost your sense of intuition and creative spirit?

Looking back, have you ever said something you vowed to never say again? Then hear yourself saying, “Urgh!! I said it again!!” ?

Ever wonder what is going on?

Without getting too technical (as this is not rocket science) these are indications of a mindbody ‘split’. Read my newsletter below with a personal story of how my mind and body felt like they were split apart with just ONE word – and how I learnt a practice to reconnect – and how you can too!

“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.” – Edward de Bono

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Unable to focus on any one thing for more than a few minutes – or seconds?! The reason could be your analytical ‘thinking’ mind is on overdrive. I know as this was once a huge issue in my life.

According to The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two published in 1956 by the cognitive psychologist George A. Miller of Princeton University our analytical conscious minds are limited in what we can process cognitively at one time.

When we are functioning primarily in our ‘heads’ it can lead to feeling off balance and out of touch with who we are. We become robotic and lose the connection with the vast amount of tacit knowledge and intuition we as humans have stored within. Over time we can become static and unresponsive – like a firecracker without a spark!

Operating primarily from a place in your head over time can also lead to a deeply rooted feeling of incongruence. If you have ever noticed what you say (out loud and to yourself) and what you do are entirely different than what you really want to say and do this is a sign of an incongruency.

This example from Alice in Wonderland demonstrates incongruency in a delightful way…

“Then you should say what you mean,” the March Hare went on.

“I do,” Alice hastily replied; “at least–at least I mean what I say–that’s the same thing, you know.”

“Not the same thing a bit!” said the Hatter. “You might just as well say that “I see what I eat” is the same thing as “I eat what I see”!”

Lewis Carroll

Incongruency impacts mental and physical well-being

Incongruency comes at a huge cost in personal life and in business. The feeling of being incongruent is quite unpleasant. If not dealt with quickly and effectively can influence employee’s mental and physical health and overall well-being. Over time this leads to increased stress, strain on staffing resources and negatively impacts the bottom line.

Imagine this story unfolding in real life…

An account executive of a Fortune 50 company is tasked to draft a letter of intent to a platinum level client. The risk is high. There are millions in revenue and six-figures on the bottom line to win -or lose. The account executive has developed a deeply felt sense of rapport with the client, has nurtured the relationship over many years, and has prepared a comprehensive plan that she is confident will result in the client renewing the agreement.

The letter gets sent for approval to the sales manager. One sentence in the letter catches the manager’s eye. It starts with “I feel the way forward is to…” and goes on to lay out an orchestrated plan for the renewal of the business. Within hours the letter returns with an OK! …except for one change written in the margin, “You can’t say the word feel.”

Reading this, I was stumped. (Yes, this story is true). Can’t say the word feel? Really? Truly at a loss, I asked my boss, “If I can’t say feel, what can I say?” She said, “Think. Change feel to think as you are not allowed to say the word feel in business.”

Her response was shocking! I felt robbed of my creativity. Followed shortly after with a loss of passion for my work. In order to please my boss I shut down my intuition. My life became static and robotic. Every day became more the chore trying to think my way through challenges and obstacles.

Over time all that thinking lead to a breakdown – both mentally and physically. Eventually, I quit my job. IMHO, that company lost a really great employee… and it didn’t have be that way!

Are YOU feeling robbed of your creativity? Do you want to steal it back?

When I decided to steal my creativity back my life changed dramatically! I learnt how to connect with my intuition again using Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) practices. I now use NLP on a daily basis to operate as a whole person – with both mind and body working together in sync. With analytical and creative minds working in harmony life feels waaaaay more balanced. I feel more confident, congruent and authentic.

If you feel you are not achieving what you want in life, career or business, you feel stuck internally, feel you are holding yourself back (and you are looking for ways how you can fix this), then I know you are going to appreciate the next NLP Cafe topic on ‘Tapping Into Your Creative Unconscious”.
